The Feilding Brass Band started in 1883, under the direction of Mr Sam Daw. Concerts were held during the first two years to raise funds for instruments. It was noted in the local paper that the early fundraising events were not well attended, but this soon changed and the band received fifteen instruments in July, 1883.
The first recorded results from a National competition that the band participated in, were from the New Zealand Brass Band Championships, held in 1891. Feilding hosted the event at Easter and the band came third, behind Wellington Garrison and Grays Wellington Band.
Feilding Brass has always had a role to play with New Zealanders serving in wars overseas. The first such recorded event was playing for the service at the departure of troops to the Boer War in 1899. A Roll of Honour on the wall of the band room commemorates the many members of the band who served their country.
The band went through some difficult times in 1927 when it was suggested that the band should be disbanded due to low attentance. Luckily this didn't eventuate and in 1928 the band was renamed as Feilding Municipal Band.
During the 1930s the band was still experiencing some financial difficulties as instruments needed repairs, council funds were decreasing and the band room had overdue maintenance concerns. To help overcome some of these financial worries, the band decided to decrease the conductor's salary. The conductor resigned and consequently Mr R.L. Lowe was selected from fourteen applicants.
The band was called on many times during the Second World War with fundraising concerts, assisting with parades for the Local Territorial Association and farewells to soldiers. 1942 was the band's Diamond Jubilee, but due to the war, celebrations were postponed.
There were however, celebration in 1958 for the 75th Anniversary. Activites included a gathering of former members, a dinner, church parade and an afternoon's entertainment at Kowhai Park.
The 1970s saw the building of new band rooms behind the Council Chambers. Many local firms and band members helped to build the new rooms, including Maegaard Bros laying the foundations and Fauldings Electrical completing the electrical work. The band rooms were opened on the 1st of May, 1976, by the Mayor Mr G.H. Corrick.
Feilding Brass reached its Centenary in 1983. The celebrations were similar to that of the 75th Anniversary, although a small booklet detailing the band's history was put together by Mr J. Clevely. The booklet has provided the information for this summary.
